Throughout the history of figurative sculpture there have been innumerable approaches to the subject, countless expressions that concentrate on and are connected by nothing other than that particular premise.  My current body of figurative work in clay, finished in myriad materials and focusing primarily on ‘the portrait’ investigates the psychology of borders, boundaries and environs upon an individual. Open-ended narratives are created through the juxtaposition of sculpted portraits and objects implying actual and metaphorical ‘places‘ with two solid and overlapping strands of reference which are:

- Portraits sculpted from observation and compositionally bordered by objects that allude to physical interior, physical exterior and meta-physical landscapes.

- Portraits culled from ‘old master’s’ paintings in which physical ‘place’ is determined by the figure’s permanent relationship to the boundary of it’s actual pictorial frame.
